Miss Gibraltar - crown princess

No brownie points for guessing that the beauty who has claimed the Miss World crown is not our own damsel. Though she stormed in the semis by cinching the title of "Beauty with a purpose" for her 'save the girl-child' campaign back home, her dreams were brazened when her pageant friends galloped past her into the finals. The svelte bombshell was oozing with confidence before the pageant kicked off. She had written off her opponents with a 'devil may care' attitude only to find herself standing in the line and clapping for Miss Gibraltar, Kaiane AldorinoREAD MORE

Atta girl, what a pity! You could have taken a few wise lessons from the other luck-lorn Miss India, Parvathi Omanakutty, who also missed the 'Miss Universe' coronet by meters.

If you had waged a bet in our Poo Chops's (Definitely not the twin sis of Bollywood sensation Piggy Chops a.k.a Priyanka Chopra but Pantaloons Femina Miss India Pooja Chopra) favour, you had better put your bucks on the race horses. What is equally exasperating is that Miss Gibraltar is nothing but a simpering sissy with a Barbie face. If you haven't had the chance to lend your ears to her answers, you saved your time. On being grilled as to where Kalaine would take her family for a tour in Johannesburg, she blandly answered Africa. (As if Africa is some hot spot in Johannesburg. I pray her History is as good as her Geography.) But the magical words that had cast such a bewitching spell on the hearts of the millions Africans were: "Also I have found that Africans are really friendly, and they have a good heart." A million dollar answer and the Convention Center was resounding with boisterous hoots. Quizzical about the USP of this answer? Well, it's all about winning hearts with the most touted speeches, be it cliche. After all, it's a beauty content for Christ's sake, not an IQ test.

What whishy washy episodes for the Indian head turners! After Dia Mirza (Miss Asia Pacific 2000), the beauty crown has had been eluding India's luck consistently. The beauty grooming institutes that mushroomed in galore, consistently  failed to sell any of their products (read students) in the world market (read beauty pageants). Almost a decade gone and the record is untainted. A hideous record for a country, which witnessed a rapid succession of such crowns as if India was a reservoir of beauty-spawns that hatched into 'Snow White's and 'Cinderellas', right? The  mass exploded firecrackers when India outshone in the international circuit. But the silent brains at work did add up two and two to make a four.

The world at large never eyed the third world countries with an iota of importance until the beauty industry discovered untapped goldmines here. The bizz gurus and marketing honchos could sniff that the Indian market was a massive vista that could be easily harnessed. They had the biggest bait of implanting the demand stimuli in a country whose demographic count was nearing a billion. In a bid to foray into the Indian market, what could have been a smarter move then to turn the 'desi' damsels into frog princesses? These pageant winners in turn opened "Pandora's boxes" for the brands and the dream to conquer the third world market was realized. Such small mercies for such daunting task! Thanks to the Pandora's boxes, the cosmetic industry, the lifestyle products industry have engineered astounding turnovers.

In today's date, new sponsors are investing in the pageant business as its market potential is terrific. It's a clash of the business titans that goes behind a pageant. Some business strategy, some conspiracy is always at work. Who knows but the money go-getters and the market analysts might have discovered that the Great Rock of Gibraltar remained to be uncharted? Therefore, the goody bags did the wonders again. It had Kaiane as a 'lolly-pop' gift hamper to the Peninsular territory. Post the crowning glory, she would soon be in the business. She would perhaps hand-hold the brands into the territory.

Just a wish for the brains who cook up such intricate plans. May your tribe increase. Who cares even two bit whether a Pooja Chopra or a Parvathy Omanakutty brings home the crown? It's business. As long as the business is doing good, there will be Miss Beauties in every corner of a lane or by-lane.
